New home needed for this handsome 20 month old male giant schnauzer. He is un-neutered, micro-chipped, his vaccinations are up to date, flea treated, wormed and has a chemical implant (25/10/2023) valid for 6 months. Past medical issues: IMHA diagnosed in April 2023 - steroid treatment for a few months - no more treatment required and his bloods are now totally fine, although this will be an ongoing consideration for his new owner to be aware of.
He is a sweet and energetic boy, he is very clever and is food led - say chicken or cheese and he will run to the fridge waiting for his treat! He is obedient most of the time! He does jump up when he is excited - when you come home from being out for example - and when he is really excited he bounces on all fours. He opens doors himself and takes himself out for the toilet when needed if able to. He knows sit, stay, leave it, drop it, roll over, peekaboo, down, crate, back, wait, etc. He is crate trained which he normally uses after a walk, he hasn’t been crated overnight. He pulls on the lead, so walks with a Halti head collar; no aggression or reactivity to other dogs, his recall is not great if there are other distractions, so normally walked on a Halti for safety, not off lead. He does bark a lot when he wants something - when it’s time for his walk or for his dinner or he wants to play etc.
He is a bit anxious in the car and we haven’t done any long journeys with him, the longest is about 45 minutes. He is also anxious at the vets, but this is probably because he had to go often during his IMHA treatment having blood tests etc. The vet feels that with time and patience and friendly visits just to see the vets he should improve. He needs someone who has lots of time for him, perhaps someone who is at home most of the day. We do leave him for 3 hours max and he is fine and usually just sleeps as long as he has had a walk before.
His current owner has started some training with a professional dog trainer to try help his barking and will continue this until we find him a suitable home. Ideally he would be best suited to an experienced home where he will need ongoing training and a firm owner to take charge. He needs a home without small children but could maybe live with another giant or large dog. He will need to be collected from the Surrey area.
If you feel you could offer this dog his loving, forever home then please email us at admin@giantschnauzerrescue.co.uk telling us about yourselves and why you feel you’d be a good match for him, we will get back to any we feel may be promising
